Rozanna Lum, TAFY student, Auckland campus
"A mix of exhilaration and uncertainty overwhelmed me with the thought of my year ahead at Taylors College. Though unsure of what was going to come my way, I was thrilled to pieces as I entered a new phase in my life, traveling to New Zealand to study. I knew things would be different there, but sometimes having a change is not such a bad thing.
Life as an international student in this foreign land had proved to be quite a challenging task for me during my first few months here in New Zealand. Coming from a country with a typical tropical climate, where there is only summer all year round, I had to adjust to cold winter temperatures here when I first arrived. With almost every street looking identical to me and a bad sense of direction, finding my way around seemed to be a rather arduous task. The public transport system in Auckland is also not exactly fantastic compared to my home country, but all I needed was just some exploration and a few trips around to get myself familiarized with the new surroundings. In addition, as a girl who had spent the past ten years of her life in an all girls’ school, it was rather weird for me to have the presence of boys around the school. However, I soon settled in quickly with my new classmates, enjoying every moment spent together with them.
My experience at Taylors College had definitely surpassed my expectations. Though situated in one small building, it has all the facilities that are required for a small school population. “Superb” is the only word to describe the teachers here at Taylors, not only are they resourceful, they are also very approachable and encouraging. They are able to answer any doubts that you have in mind, equipping you with all the knowledge that is needed for you to do well in the final examination.
This year at Taylors College in New Zealand made me change my perspective on things. Being able to experience life outside the box, it had allowed me to face and overcome challenges that I would have thought weren't possible. By exposing myself to different cultures, people, and experiences, I have adopted a greater and bolder outlook on life. I have without a doubt, grown into a more independent and responsible person. The precious memories and friendships i have made throughout the year at Taylors College will go along with me till I grow old."
